In which the heroine and co hold a surprise birthday party for Yu Le Xuan and Miss Han's plans go awry

Ep 17: "Surprise!"

Xue Wen Xi and Feng Cheng Jun cook up a storm in preparation for Yu Le Xuan's surprise birthday party and a lovely group of scholars gather at Yu Le Xuan's place to surprise him. It's a great party - great food, great wine, great company. There's also some dance performances from the scholars, specially for Yu Le Xuan.

Ep 17: Yu Le Xuan shows Lei Ze Xin how to hold the moon

Of course it's not a birthday party without presents! They all give him gifts, including Feng Cheng Jun, who gives him a classic calligraphy painting from a renown master and Lei Ze Xin, who gives him a toy horse.  "It's exactly as I remember it!"

(Flashback to when they were kids - the clever Yu Le Xuan bets with other kids that he can hold the moon in his hand and does so, optical illusion wise, and they beat him up and break his horse toy in retaliation.  The young Lei Ze Xin protects him, fists flying, offers to mend his horse toy, and we have the start of a beautiful friendship...) 

Turns out it was Xue Wen Xi who gave Lei Ze Xin the idea of recreating the horse toy though (🐼: because let's face it, he wouldn't have been that thoughtful, haha!).

Although Xue Wen Xi is poor, she has also prepared a gift - personal vouchers from her to write three novel volumes for free, to perform 3 errands, a wish...  He almost uses it to request she leaves the Academy but can't bring himself to do it. 

Han Sheng Zhi gatecrashes the party (🐼: party pooper). He is about to expose Yu Le Xuan's background.  But Yu Le Xuan beats him to it, confessing that he is a commoner in front of the party. He also says that he won't do what Han Sheng Zhi has asked (🐼: forced) him to do.  

Despite this, the scholars stay, and continue to drink with Yu Le Xuan, surrounding him with their moral support and approval.  He tells Xue Wen Xi what Han Sheng Zhi wanted, and it's her turn to be moved. Yu Le Xuan uses his one wish to ask her to call him "Big Brother" and secretly vows to protect her, because doing so is to protect his hope of fighting against fate, which they are both doing in staying at the Academy.   

In Teacher Ding's class, they learn that there will be shooting stars in the night sky soon, a once in a lifetime phenomenon. All the scholars want to go. Teacher Ding thinks it's a good idea. Principal Feng enters, initially is against the idea, but when he finds out the idea was Feng Cheng Jun's - well, in that case... 😆 

Miss Han tries to wrangle Yu Le Xuan to organise a date with Feng Cheng Jun watching shooting stars. He says that your brother would kill me, no way...She bribes a boatman by herself, telling him only to leave when there are two people on the ship.   

Feng Cheng Jun wants to see the shooting stars from the vantage point of the remote Qinming Island, but Xue Wen Xi wants to join the crowds elsewhere. Yu Le Xuan (🐼: clearly a shipper of theirs) tells Xue Wen Xi that lovers who make a wish together beneath shooting stars will have that wish fulfilled. She promptly decides to go to Qinming Island. Unfortunately for Miss Han, she arrives after Xue Wen Xi and Feng Cheng Jun have set sail...

Ep 17: Happy times

Xue Wen Xi and Feng Cheng Jun race to the top of the island (he lets her win the race to make her happy) and she is cutely happy when he says he's happy to let her win forever if it makes "Bin-de" happy.

As night falls, it begins to rain. Any hope of shooting stars?

Thoughts

🐼: This episode is really heartwarming - I love how Yu Le Xuan's birthday party shows him how genuinely his friends treat him and how he steps up and takes the wind out of Han Zhi Sheng's sails by 'confessing' his background. Thumbs up for Yu Le Xuan👍 As for Miss Han? The best laid plans of mice and (wo)men... If she had succeeded, I suspect Feng Cheng Jun would have swum back to shore rather than be stuck with her on a remote island😆
